Growing up in a musical family, learning piano, guitar, saxophone and drums, he discovered dance music with a DJ Shadow / DJ Krush 12” record on Mo Wax (label) recommended to him at the age of 17. Spending the next 10 years catching up and rabidly seeking out music ranging from house to hip hop, deep funk to drum n’ bass, it was the introduction to techno, and witnessing inspirational sets by Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin while at university in London that sparked a desire to DJ.
While playing at small parties around London, and later, bigger events at clubs such as Turnmills and Heaven, with a residency at a bar in Islington, it was visits to see CJ Macintosh at City Loud (Turnmills) and Norman Jay at the Notting Hill Carnival that taught Dante the essence of DJing – making people happy through great music that they can dance to.
Dante’s style today depends on the event that he is booked to play, but his ideal set is two parts funk, one part house, one part techno and one part soul… Cutting-edge and classic, funky discofied house, deep dubby minimal techno, hip-hop, funk and disco classics, breaks, techno, accapellas and re-edits – with vinyl, CDJs or a laptop …. Dante is a versatile and technically-adept DJ who can play in any of these styles, and more, and realizes that the role of a DJ is to let people dance, and this he never fails to do.
After moving to Japan in 2004, Dante quickly became active in the Tokyo club scene, acquiring a residency at the techno event ‘Irizo’ at Womb, recently voted No. 3 club in the world in DJ Magazine in the UK. He has played at many other clubs in Tokyo; Air, Warehouse, Club Fai, to name a few, alongside visiting and local DJs, such as James Lavelle, Extrawelt, Yousef, Mike McKenna, Carlos Gibbs and DJ Kawasaki.
With his own productions in progress too, DJ Dante continues to play his selections of quality music as a celebration of good times and the dance, bringing joy to dancefloors in 2007..
